Village of Diagares
Village of Diagares
History
Aldeia de Diagares, located within the 48-hectare Quinta de Diagares, is in the parish of Valadares, in the municipality of Baião.
The village consists of 12 houses and a chapel, which were in an advanced state of disrepair.
They recently underwent a meticulous restoration process aimed at giving these buildings a new lease of life, while preserving their original design.
The chapel, called Capela de Santo António, was given its name due to the presence of an ancient statue of the saint inside. This chapel, dating from the 17th century, has been restored while remaining faithful to its religious essence.

Baião
History of Baião
Baião is a municipality in the district of Porto. It is bordered to the south by the river Douro, to the northwest by the river Tâmega and to the north and northeast by the Marão mountain range.
The settlement of these lands began many years ago. It is thought that the first settlements appeared in the 5th or 4th millennium BC.
In the Aboboreira and Castelo de Matos mountains, archaeological studies have revealed the existence of a huge megalithic necropolis - one of the largest in Portugal - with around four dozen Mamoas. The Celts were probably the first people to stay here. Their dominance in this region is strongly marked by castros, menhirs and other archaeological finds. Their culture has always remained in this Marão enclave and their presence can still be felt today.
At the turn of the High to Low Middle Ages, the land of Baião was formed, and it was dominated by a castle - the Castelo de Matos. Later, King João I gave the lands of Baião to a relative of the Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira. Baião is the municipality with the highest percentage of green area and forest in the district of Porto. It has several natural resources of unique beauty, such as the Serra da Aboboreira, the Serra do Marão, the Serra do Castelo de Matos or the Douro, Teixeira and Ovil rivers.
The municipality of Baião is famous for the quality of its meats, where smoked meats and oven-roasted lamb are king, not forgetting its wines.

Baião - Land of flavours
The gastronomy of Baião is so special that some even say that Eça de Queiroz fell in love with both the landscape of this land and the flavors of its traditional cuisine when he wrote A Cidade e as Serras (The City and the Mountains), referring to the magnificent broad bean rice. This is borne out by the title that the Brazilian ambassador, Dário Castro Alves, gave to the Queirosian cultural gastronomic dictionary: Era Tormes e Amanhecia.
